Volunteers @ the Miners’ Library

Over the past few months we have hosted a group of volunteers from a variety of schools at Swansea University. The volunteers have been a real joy to work with and have uncovered some really interesting things within our collections.

Here’s what they had to say:

Beau Jones (MA in History)

I very much enjoyed my time at the South Wales Miners’ Library. It was great to experience some new skills, ordering newspaper archives, collections, creating the inventory for disaster relief, attending meetings, discovering banners and their uses. My experience has also been useful for my own research interests. A great blend of informal professionalism : )

Carole Desaint-Denis (BA in English)

I had a really good experience at the Miners’ library. I gained skills in cataloging, referencing, and collections management. The staff was lovely and very helpful throughout the whole placement.

Richard Davies (BA in History)

I enjoyed my time volunteering at the South Wales Miners’ Library. It was a brilliant opportunity to have an insight of the workings of a library. What made my time at the library so special, was the uniqueness of the library, especially its collections. The collections are incredibly diverse, from written and oral sources and from English to Welsh language sources. The volunteering placement has been great help in introducing me to new skills as well as allowing me to practice existing ones. The experience has broadened my understanding and appreciation about the history of the South Wales coalfield, to the extent that I will conduct my third year research on a part of its Twentieth Century. It has been brilliant to help out with arranging the donated collections, to see how one generation of miners’ leaders were influenced by left-wing thinkers. It has been insightful to help photograph art works of miners as well as their campaign posters, which brought colour to the work experience. I am thankful for the experience and to meet new and enthusiastic people. Diolch!
